Car finance for FIFO and resources workers
FIFO income is reliable, often high, and routinely misread by automated bank assessments. If you have been knocked back despite earning well, the problem is usually how your payslip presents — not your capacity to repay.
Want to know what you qualify for? The enquiry takes about a minute and there's no credit check to find out.
Get my quotesWhy FIFO applications get declined by the banks
A typical FIFO payslip is a base rate plus a stack of allowances — site allowance, living away from home allowance, travel, and roster loading. Automated credit assessment at the major banks tends to read the base as your income and treat the rest as variable, which can strip a third or more off what you actually earn before anyone looks at the file.
Compounding this, a two-and-two or eight-and-six roster produces uneven pay cycles. Where a system expects a fortnightly rhythm and sees lumpy deposits, it flags instability. None of this reflects the risk you actually represent, but it is enough for a computer to decline you before a human reads the application.
Lenders that write a lot of WA business assess this properly. They know what a Pilbara roster looks like, they know which allowances are permanent features of a contract rather than one-offs, and they will shade them into assessable income at a sensible rate instead of discarding them.
What lenders will want to see
The stronger your documentation, the less room there is for an assessor to be conservative. Most FIFO applications are decided on a handful of things:
- Two or three recent payslips showing the allowance structure clearly
- Your employment contract or a letter confirming the roster and its duration
- Length of time with the current employer, and in the industry overall — a first-year worker on a six-month contract is assessed differently to someone eight years in
- Whether you are a direct employee or engaged through a labour hire firm
- Bank statements showing the income actually landing
Contract length matters more than the headline number
A common trap: a worker on an excellent day rate with four months left on a contract can be harder to approve than someone earning less on a permanent arrangement. Lenders are pricing the likelihood that the income continues for the loan term, not the size of the current pay packet.
If your contract is short-dated but you have a long history of rolling renewals in the same industry, say so up front. Continuity of work across contracts is the argument that gets these applications across the line, and it is not something a lender can infer from documents alone.
Buying while you are on site
Practically, the difficulty with FIFO is timing. You are away for the exact stretch you would otherwise use to shop, negotiate and settle, then home for a swing you would rather not spend at dealerships from Joondalup to Rockingham.
Getting your finance sorted before your swing home changes that. You arrive knowing what you can spend, negotiating on drive-away price rather than weekly repayments, and settlement can be arranged around your roster instead of squeezed into it.
Common questions
Will a lender count my site allowance as income?
Many will, at least in part. Permanent allowances written into your contract are usually assessable, sometimes shaded to 80 percent or so. One-off bonuses and overtime that is not guaranteed get treated more conservatively. It varies by lender, which is exactly why comparing matters here.
I'm on labour hire rather than direct. Does that hurt?
It narrows the field but does not rule you out. Labour hire is common in WA and specialist lenders are used to it. Your time in the role and industry history carry more weight than the employment structure itself.
Can I apply while I'm on site?
Yes. The enquiry takes about a minute and everything after that is handled by phone and email, so you can have finance approved before you fly home.
Does a high income guarantee approval?
No. Lenders assess income stability, existing commitments and your credit history alongside the amount you earn. A strong income helps but it is one input among several.
